What is Ikebana?

the Japanese art of flower arrangement

“LIVING FLOWERS”

The original basic structure of a Japanese flower arrangement is based on three lines, considered in some schools to symbolize Heaven, Earth and Mankind and in others Sun, Moon and Earth.

The term Ikebana is from the Japanese ikeru (“keep alive, arrange flowers, living”) and hana (“flower”). Possible translations include “giving life to flowers” and “arranging flowers”.

Contrary to the idea of floral arrangement as a collection of particoloured or multicoloured arrangements of blooms, Ikebana often emphasises other plant areas.

Areas such as its stems, branches and leaves emphasise Line, Shape, Form, Texture and Space within the arrangement. This is also connected to the respect for minimalism.
